Eric Kaposta’s bronze bust, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., commemorates the life of the leader of the Civil Rights movement. Inspired by his religious upbringing and the life of Mahatma Gandhi, MLK advanced civil rights through nonviolence and civil disobedience. His assassination on April 4, 1968, was followed by riots across America. MLK was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal. A quote on the brick plinth on which the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Bust stands states as follows:
“If I can spread the message as the Master taught, then my being will not be in vain.”
Houston sculptor Kaposta’s works can also be seen at Toyota Center, NRG Stadium, and at Minute Maid Park.
